Longbourn by Jo Baker is the retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice from the point of view of the Longbourn servants. Â I received a copy free to review via Netgalley. Â I should start by saying straight off that this retelling doesn’t have Austen’s sharp insight and witty dialogue, but that would be a lot to ask of any writer. Â That is not to say it’s not an enjoyable read nevertheless. Â What I liked M...
Despite my rant yesterday, and despite having received no shipping notification my Kobo Aura 6 inch ereader was delivered to my door this afternoon. Â I’ve played with it for a little while and here are my first impressions. It is a gorgeous device. Â I really like the industrial design that the screen is flat without a bevel. Â It makes it feel very tablet like – and avoids messy crumbs being caught! Â eReaders aren’t...

As some of you may know, I placed a new Kobo Aura on preorder, and I’m wondering if some of you are experiencing the same issues I’m having. Â It took me several attempts to place the order, which I simply put down to attempting to preorder just an hour or so after it was made available. However, that is not the only issue I’ve experienced. I have received no confirmation from Kobo at all regarding my order – I h...
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker is the story of, well, a golem and a jinni who find themselves in turn of the century New York. Â Recently awoken/liberated respectively they must find their feet in and adapt to the New World while avoiding threats which could destroy them. First of all, I would like to say just how much I loved this story. I loved the characters, the narrative, the setting. Â What I found rather interesting was...

This week I read A Cat Called Dog by Jem Vanston which I received free to review from Netgalley. Â It is a sweet tale of a young cat who was raised by dogs and therefore thinks and acts in a more doglike fashion. Â He is taken under the wing of a more mature cat named George, and together with George and his friends he must save George’ s mistress from disaster. Â The book is exactly what it claims to be; a light, fluffy tale whi...
